Grading & error detection

Professional Sheldon-scale grading

Every scan returns an estimated grade from P-1 to MS-70/PR-70, automatic error and variety detection, and a confidence range that tightens with your plan. It is the differentiator that sets CoinVault Pro apart from simple identification apps.

How the Sheldon scale works

The numismatic standard is a 1–70 scale. Higher is better — from a barely identifiable coin up to a flawless specimen.

P-1 to AG-3
Poor to About Good

Heavily worn; design barely visible.

G-4 to VF-30
Good to Very Fine

Clear design with moderate wear.

EF-40 to AU-58
Extremely Fine to About Unc.

Light wear, most detail intact.

MS-60 to MS-70
Mint State

No wear; MS-70 is flawless.

Proof coins use the parallel PR-1 to PR-70 scale. Grades from CoinVault Pro are estimates and do not replace professional third-party certification.

Accuracy tightens with your plan

Every plan grades on the same scale; higher tiers narrow the confidence range around the estimate.

Automatic error & variety detection

The same scan that grades your coin also looks for the striking errors that turn a common coin into a valuable one.

Doubled Die (DDO / DDR)

Detects a doubled image on the obverse (DDO) or reverse (DDR) caused by a misaligned hubbing — the famous 1955 and 1972 cents.

Repunched Mint Mark (RPM)

Identifies a mint mark punched more than once at slightly different positions, leaving a visible secondary outline.

Off-Center Strike

Flags coins struck off-center, where part of the design is missing and a blank crescent appears on the planchet.

Filled Die & more

Catches filled dies, die cracks and other striking anomalies that distinguish an error from an ordinary coin.

Matched against 25+ known varieties

Rather than guessing, CoinVault Pro compares your coin against a curated database of famous, well-documented varieties.
